Soccer Experience: Ben began playing recreational soccer at the age of 5 and continued throughout his teenage years playing competitive travel soccer through high school. In 1993, while attending Virginia Tech, Ben first became certified as a soccer referee with the United States Soccer Federation. His referee career matured over the next 7 years.
From 2000 to 2002, he refereed at three US Youth Soccer Regional Championships, three US Youth Soccer Regional ODP Tournaments, one US Youth Soccer National Championship, and one US Youth Soccer National ODP Championship. During this time, Ben also refereed several seasons in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) professional divisions. In 2003, Ben attended the United States Soccer Federation National Referee Certification Camp where he upgraded to a Grade 3 National Referee.
In 2004, Ben began his first season in Major League Soccer (MLS), working 4 matches as a fourth official. Additionally, he refereed several USL First Division matches and was selected to referee the USL Second Division National Championship.
2005 made way for Ben’s debut as a referee in MLS. He completed a strong season with 8 matches as the referee and 5 as fourth official.
In addition to working in MLS, Ben has refereed college soccer for 10 years. Ben regularly works in the Mid-Atlantic area of the US, refereeing ACC conference matches and NCAA tournament matches.
